Operators of commercial vehicle fleets have a number of legal, safety and operational responsibilities that refer to both the vehicle and the employee who drives them. These include ensuring the vehicle is registered, warranted and fit for the road, and that the driver is licensed, fit for duty and follows traffic laws and any local bylaws.

Improving safety on our roads

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) works with industry to encourage the safe use and compliance of fleet vehicles. If your business operates a fleet of vehicles as a part of your everyday work, it's important to ensure it is managed effectively. Remember, it’s also the law.

The NZTA can provide advice on how to:

  • Choose vehicles that are safe, efficient and fit for purpose
  • Develop preventative maintenance programmes for fleet vehicles
  • Improve driver behaviour
  • Run training programmes for drivers to become safer and more fuel efficient
  • Develop a safe driving policy
  • Comply with related legislation.
